On October 12th, 2012 at 22 h 15 min Moscow time, a Soyuz-ST-B launch vehicle was successfully launched from the Guiana Space Centre with the Fregat-MT upper stage and two Galileo-IOV satellites atop.
The Soyuz-ST-B launch vehicle is developed and manufactured by TsSKB-Progress under the Soyuz in the Guiana Space Centre program. Soyuz-ST-B is a modified version of Soyuz-2-1b designed to satisfy requirements of the Guiana Space Centre with respect to safety, telemetry system, and operating conditions.
TsSKB-progress plays a key role in the Soyuz in GSC project: the enterprise is responsible for the launch-vehicle, launch pad and also performs general technical management of Russian industrial enterprises engaged in launch activities.
Soyuz-ST-B is modified according to the European partners’ requirements of safety, telemetry system, and operating conditions.
Within the framework of the Soyuz in the GSC project, it is planned to perform no less than 50 launches from the Guiana Space Centre within the next 15 years. In prospect, this will allow raising competitive capacity of both European and Russian launch-vehicles due to formation of a range of complementary launchers comprising French Arians-5, Vegas and Russian Soyuzes-ST.
